Industrially important microbial enzymes (Industrial Microbiology)

Currently engaged in the studies on the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes and bioethanol production which have potential applications in a large number of fields, including the chemical, fuel, food, agricultural, paper, textile and cosmetic industrial sectors. Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant renewable resource composed of cellulose (a polymer of glucose that represents the major fraction of lignocellulose), hemicellulose (also a sugar polymer) and lignin (a complex phenylpropane polymer). Lignocellulosic biomass, such as sugarcane bagasse, wheat bran, rice bran and sawdust holds a promise of environmentally friendly bioenergy production. We screened all these substrates for the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes. Because, enzymatic hydrolysis, currently considered a method of choice in biomass saccharification, is hampered by considerable cell-wall recalcitrance. To make this technology sustainable and cost effective, our understanding of cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis should be significantly enhanced. We have produced almost all lignocellulolytic enzymes by optimizing physical, chemical and nutritional parameters. After production, we have purified these enzymes to find their characteristics and kinetic properties.

In addition, we have screened these enzymes for their ability to degrade or decolorize textile dyes, which are major pollutants in different parts of Andhra Pradesh. Along with this we are working with biodegradation of organophosphorus pesticides. A good number of papers are published and few are in press in all these areas of research.

Production of biofuels

Production of biofuels is of significant scientific interest in the context of sustainable environment. It is highly required to developed feasible process for the production of biofuels from agrowastes/forest residues/lignocellulosic substrates. By carefully studying various parameters optimized protocols to enhance the yield of biofuels production are developed. Robust performance of sulfite chemistry was demonstrated to effectively remove the strong recalcitrance of Douglas-fir forest residue for high titer (42 g/L) bioethanol production without detoxification with high yield of 282 L/tone. This study demonstrated that underutilized woody biomass such as forest residues can be efficiently converted to biofuel and bioproducts using mature pulping technologies with proven commercial scalability.
